In 1989, Luke and Christine Elias purchased a small cabinet shop in Alfred, Ontario, that employed a few people to serve local homeowners.
Rather than scaling back to weather the early 1990s housing market slowdown, the company strategically pivoted into commercial millwork. That decision shaped the future of the business.
The mindset was clear: never accept the status quo.
The Muskoka standard was set early: find better ways to build.
Technology that improves accuracy
Throughout the 1990s, Muskoka invested early in technology that improved planning, costing, and production accuracy.
Computerized design systems linked drawings directly to material lists. Production methods were refined to reduce waste and improve efficiency. Technology was adopted with one goal: better control.
These were practical decisions. Better information led to better results.
Designing more efficient manufacturing
In 2004, Muskoka opened a purpose-built facility designed around production flow and efficiency.
We analyzed every step of our manufacturing process. Inefficient steps were eliminated. The result was a dramatic increase in output without increasing workforce or equipment.
Around the same time, we also introduced our proprietary ERP system, connecting estimating, purchasing, scheduling, and job costing into one structured platform.
Then, in 2005, Muskoka installed Canada’s first 100% water-based finishing line, reinforcing our commitment to environmental responsibility.
Tracking every component
By 2010, real-time product tracking was introduced across the factory floor. Each component could be monitored from production through shipping, reducing incomplete deliveries and improving accuracy.
Paper processes were eliminated. Information moved digitally. Visibility improved across every department.
Automation and continuous improvement
Over the past decade, automation has further strengthened our output and consistency. Advanced panel processing systems increased production capacity significantly. Finishing output expanded. Material movement became more efficient. New robotic systems are now being introduced into cabinet assembly.
Automation has not reduced opportunity. It has created better roles, higher skill development, and performance-based incentive programs for our team.
Today, Muskoka operates with approximately 70 employees in an 18,600-square-foot facility, producing three times the industry average per square foot, per employee.
